|
| The Eagle is best known
for having the best Sunday afternoon beer bust. During the summer
it is the place to see and be seen. Sunday beers busts run
from 1500-1800 and are often hosted by community groups. Visit the

ample motorcycle parking and bikers get drink specials when they bring
a helmet. California law prohibits smoking in bar. The
Eagle has a large outdoor patio with heaters so you can smoke as much as

Wall. Public sex with raunchy patrons is commonplace and roaches

| Harvey's is the most
recent incarnation of the Castro's famous Elephant
Walk. Harvey's features huge windows looking out on the busy
intersection of Castro and 18th Streets. From your bar stool you
can watch the gay boys, homeless and straight tourists wandering through
the Castro. Harvey's cutish waitstaff also serve bar-quality food.

| Extensively remodeled
in 2003, Moby Dick has shaken off its backwater image and is a popular
local video bar. During the week, you'll find locals playing pool

| Formerly known as Uncle
Bert's, the Mix has been renovated and reopened to attract a slightly more
upscale clientele. Uncle Berts was famous for a patio where inhaled
chemicals were as popular as those in a glass. We haven't heard whether
or not this is true of the Mix.

| Twin Peaks |
| The Twin Peaks was
the first gay bar in the United States to feature windows where the clientele
could be seen by outsiders. Considered a milestone in the history
of the gay rights movement, the Twin Peaks is often referred to as the
"Glass Coffin" as it attracts a older group of patrons. It is comfortable,
warm and a great place to watch the boys on Castro Street.

about bathhouses and sex clubs in San Francisco:
In response to the AIDS epidemic
in the 1980s, the San Francisco Health Department banned bathhouses in
the city. Sex clubs are still legal but do not provide private spaces secluded
from interlopers or prying eyes. (Bathhouses traditionally rent private
rooms, sex clubs do not.) All of the locations listed below are sex
clubs. If you value the privacy of a bathhouse, we recommend you consider
Steamworks in Berkeley. Be advised, because there are no bathhouses
in San Francisco, Steamworks often has a long wait on the weekends.
